History

The existence traces and evidences on the Vrsar territory, drag from the period of the pre-history. First known people who have inhabited the Istrian land where the Liburnians and Histris whose ethnical belonging was recognizable. Their main occupation was farming, livestock farming and naval commerce. They where constructing the fortressed settlements up on the hill to be more protected and to have better patrol for the enemies.

Furthermore, that was the way how Vrsar was built. On the nearby hill, today where found the archaeological localities with the leftovers from the Bronze Age.  At that hill, a rich Roman has built a delightful Villa Rustica which remains are still preserved.

That leads to a conclusion that Vrsar was an important Istrian market at the Roman Time.

In the early Middle ages when Vrsar became an important old-Christian center, the Slavs came on this territory.

In the Baroque and Renaissance time, Vrsar has started to intensively develop and spread. In the19th century, Vrsar becomes a village under the rural community of Porec, building a port in the valley, building new houses near the sea and becoming a settlement.

The historical and cultural monuments that have still survived and are now the valuable notabilities are: The Church St. Foska; Ruins of Castle which was the residence of the Porec bishops; Main City Gate; Streets and Piazzas; Parish Church St. Martin; Old Roman Gates; Church St. Anton; Church St. George; Roman Barrow; Old Christian Basillica; Roman Basillica St. Mary of Sea; abandoned quarries.
