Island Brač, the largest island of the central Dalmatian group of islands. It is separated from the mainland by the Brač Channel, from the island of Solta by the so-called Splitska Vrata and from the island of Hvar by the Hvar Channel.
The limestone part of the coast is rocky and steep, while the rest is rather low and sandy. The island landscape is dominated by a karst limestone relief, with numerous gullies, crevices, cavities, round valleys and coves.
There are no surface water streams on the island. The largest places are Pučišća and Supetar. Major farming products are olive oil, wine and fruit chief occupations include also livestock breeding and fishing. Major quarries, where the famous Brac building stone is excavated, are located near Pučišća, Selca, Postira, Splitska and Donji Humac and it is the kind of building stone was used in the construction of the White House in Washington and the Palace of Diocletian in Split. A road network has been constructed throughout the island, ferry lines Split - Supetar, Makarska - Sumartin and ship lines with Supetar and Bol.

The history of Island Brač is filled with Neolithic influences and there are archaeological sites from the Bronze and Iron Ages that are fun to visit. The first people to settle Brač were the Illyrians who named the island Brattia. The Greeks and Romans had settlements on the island in the early centuries. The Middle Ages brought the Slavs to the island and in the 14th century it was ruled by the Hungarian-Croatian King. The Venetians, French and Austrians all had control over the island at some point in time, so the island is filled with architecture that reflects a diverse cultural background.
There are ten sanctuaries from various centuries on the island which display both pre-Romanesque and Romanesque architecture. There are also some churches built in the 15th century that are a more complex form of Renaissance construction. The monastery in Bol has a wonderful botanical garden and a museum to visit.
